What Are The Side Effects Of Amoxi-Clav?

Question:

Most of what I read was informational. However, I would like to know the side effects of Amox1-Clav given for a cat bite and after a tetanus shot, please? Thank you.

Answer:

Amoxi-clav is another name for a combination of amoxicillin and clavulanic acid. Amoxicillin is a penicillin type antibiotic and clavulanic acid is a medicine that prevents the breakdown of amoxicillin by enzymes produced by some bacteria. The side effects seen with amoxicillin-clavulanate are similar to those commonly seen with amoxicillin alone.

Gastrointestinal symptoms including diarrhea (1-14%), and nausea, and vomiting (~1-5%) are more likely to occur with amoxicillin-clavulanate. These side effects can be minimized by taking the medicine with food. Rash and hives occur in roughly 3% of patients taking this combination. Oral or vaginal yeast infections may occur in up to 14% of patients. Other side effects may occur.

If you have a question about whether a particular effect is related to the combination if amoxicillin and clavulanic acid contact your doctor or a pharmacist who knows you.

The tetanus shot will not affect this medication. Injection site reactions or soreness have been the most commonly reported side effects with tetanus shots.
