Should Antibiotics Be Refrigerated?

Question:

Should antibiotics be refrigerated to preserve them. I have a prescription that I had filled and didn`t end up taking them.

Answer:

Antibiotic solid dosage forms (tablets and capsules) may be stable for several months at controlled room temperature. Storage in damp areas such as the bathroom may contribute to loss of potency.

Oral antibiotic liquids which are mixed in the pharmacy just prior to dispensing generally have a short shelf life, often 14 days.

It is better to discard an unused drug than to risk using a drug which no longer works. Use caution self medicating with antibiotics, as your illness may not be caused by a bacteria or the bacteria may not be destroyed by your unused antibiotic.

Please check with the pharmacy that dispensed your antibiotic for the best information on its shelf life.
