Medical Problem With The Uvula

Question:

My husband went to the doctor 2 day`s ago.when he looked in his mouth his throat was inflamed and his uvula was hanging sideways. The doctor ordered blood work and gave my husband a z-pac antibiotic to take for 5 days but never said any reasons why it would be hangig sideways. My husband is a up to pack and a half a day smoker and has smoked for 32 years. He is 45 years old has a herniated disk in his neck a bad back but weighs 132lbs.and in pretty good shape otherwise.

Answer:

I assume you want an opinion on what might be going on.  Clearly there are two considerations here.  One is that he may have an infection in the tonsil causing the uvula to hang in a different position than normal. Usually, pain is a prominent feature as is painful swallowing. The antibiotic may not be effective if there is pus already formed around the tonsil (peritonsillar abscess).  Incision and drainage is often necessary to resolve this problem along with antibiotic therapy.

The second concern would be for a tumor arising in the tonsil or the soft palate.  Given his smoking history, cancer is a real concern.  If the problem does not respond to the antibiotic therapy, and it doesn't look like an abscess, a biopsy of the area  would probably be indicated.  If the antibiotic is not effective, he should see an Ear, Nose and Throat doctor for a full evaluation of his throat, and either incision and drainage (for abscess) or biopsy (if tumor).
