Constant Stomach Ache

Question:

My 3 yr old has gotton and ear infection about 1 time a month for the past 3 months, her doctor prescribed an antibiotic each time and the last 2 times she has developed severe stomachs and diarrhea that last for about 14 days off and on, is the medicine too strong for her little body? It has been a 10day prescription each time and this last time she was crying in pain with her stomach and her bowel movements were like mucus. I called her doctor and her Dr said it was normal after an antibiotic, but it seems a bit svere to me. Any suggestions on how to prevent the ear infection and what is causing her terrible stomach aches?

Answer:

Though I can not say for sure, the intestinal problems are likely from the antibiotics. However, the diarrhea and stomach upset is not the desired effect and you should discuss this with your child's primary care provider. There is no real way to prevent the infections. Should they continue, one should consider ventilating tube placement.
